ABOUT THE ARTIST

Susy Freelove also known as Susy Cremers born in 1961 in Maine. Studied art at the San francisco Art Institute and graduated with and BFA in 1981 MFA in 1983.
Since the late 1990's she has been creating large scale interactive art events for hundreds of families in West Cork Ireland. These events would involve 30 working artists performing in costumes and installations which she designed and created out of recycled materials. Each one a unique live experience of a classic story and were greatly popular successful and enjoyable by all who partook.
In 2008 she began to focus more on her own personal work which involved the exploration of the unseen, the artists dreams, raw emotions, internal commentary and reaction to the state of the capitalistic consumer culture. with a series of works; Giraffe man, Designer Trash, inner body.
In 2010-12 She created several large panels: The Door, The relationship and the marriage of heaven and earth.
In 2011 she created "Break in" exhibition performance a video which can be watched here. over 100 people came to see it and was based on the exploration of "who is Esus?" the artist as magician. posted in June 24 2012 of this blog. Her current work in 2013 reflects a authentic artistic exploration of self, and the world as seen upside down, and the creation of stories via painting and assemblage of mixed media and found objects.

The artist discovers self through the imagination. Exploring the Artist as a magician and shape-shifter. How gender effects the way we behave and how we respond. Celebrating the divine feminine. Questioning the world and creating a new one.
Esus is a Gaulish god known from Gaulish and North African inscriptions. The most important image of this deity is that of a man chopping down a willow tree. He may be the tutelary deity of the Esuvii tribe of Gaul. Esus may be a god of the Celtic otherworld.
Esus is an archetype deity probably associated with a triple otherworld goddess. Now whether this was in martial aspect, corresponding to Mars or in healing aspect corresponding to Mercury can not be known. Though these two principles are not entirely incompatible. There is also the question of why Esus is chopping or pruning the tree unless this is something to do with the death/rebirth of the tree itself, echoing the death and rebirth of the victims sacrificed to it. It should also be noted that the willow is a significant tree in that it stands at the intersitces between realms ie it grows in marshland standing between land and water.

Man Made

Monday, April 23, 2012

This is it: I have fallen down the rabbit hole of my own imagination akin to taking time out in Tir Na Nog.  A dangerous place to find oneself, for these are magic spaces in which a person can be enchanted and never wish to return to reality.
I FEEL I am safe as I am able to dip in and out of the dream like a bird. The story and exploration of the entity or non entity 'Esus" is a never ending story. A faery tale. This is art in motion and it has nothing to do with selling objects or ideas or even making pretty pictures that someone will want to buy and put on their wall. True Art is life itself which cant be bought or sold and a true artist is one who is present to receive the gift. I am a dream catcher but I do not own the dreams. It is time for us all to become artists/dream catchers and I am just one of the few, who is following the rabbit hole of my own heart and shouting back "come on people this is the way to go! ain't scary unless you make it so!"

Esus's hide out

the Pirate and the Clown

My dead sister, Angels and Sheela Na gigs

New work 2011

just a note to anyone who wishes to examine more closely the images in the slideshows.
Firstly if you wipe your mouse over the slide you will see a pause, forward or back buttons. If you wish to see the photos in a larger format simply double click the image and you will be taken directly to the picasa web album site and can view at your leisure. :)

My current fasinating project about Art, Identity and relationship:
 "WHO IS ESUS?"
A mocumentary about the artist Esus and his hide out in Wild West Cork (an installation of my work) as a backdrop.
A discovery of self as the artist:  storyteller, creator of creation and concepts. Detached from any particular identity or ego. Experiencing aspects of Esus through the various characters and their reaction/interaction with the art objects and environment. Exploring the relationship between nature and humans; the artist merges with the elements/life force and serves as a bridge between the two thus becomes elevated to a demi -god, angel, and mythological creature.

More simply: An introspection of human who seeks to be/is the master of his universe in the 21st century, using the fictional and elusive artist: "Esus". This format enables me a way to separate all the aspects represented both in the art objects and in the various personality(ies). It is a way of exploring the different qualities/faucets of the human as an artist/creator/storyteller. Examining the ideas of reflection, perception and manifestation of ones dreams. The subtext also examines art as valuable object v.s worthless junk and indirectly gives commentary on the consumer society in which we live; questioning: What is success and what gives value?  Bringing to light how the various characters perceive their environment/object and Esus himself thus highlighting how our perception alters our experience.

The Artist as voyeur, looking through the glass and using the imagination to examine the creations of "Esus";  mythological creature? human?  God? Artist? Angel?  Man? Woman? Child? Magician? Fantasy? Loser?  Trickster?
The artist portrayed as several persona still under development so names may change :
  • Bridget Mac: a child - a sweet dreamy innocent girl who's imagination created "Esus",
  • Roger Bunker "Esus" A talented/arrogant conman/salesman, Artist. has aspects of apollo
  • Debbie Sapp "Esus" An inspired revolutionary dyke, artist, has aspects of the huntress Diana
  • Phlina Couche "Artymous" A sensual french street performer dancer and Artist. also a mutant rat/superhero with special powers and a total trust in love. She was the first to capture the idea /concept of love notes that the Queen of hearts spent her life promoting. Muse and lover of Roger. attributed to making the heart paintings, fannies and paintings inside the body.

Other Esus characters are:
  • Esus as a blue angel
  • Esus as God- the regulator of the flow of love
  • The Queen of Hearts. a powerful matriarch. It has been suggested that she is Esus. She claims to be a benefactor of Esus and her currency in the love note. She secretly wants to be Artymous.
  • The King of Spades. A man who has no concept of art or aesthetics,  dismisses Esus and Esus's Art but if it can make money from it he's all for it. He may be jealous of him because his wife admires Esus. He can not however help but love the Queen of Hearts. His love for her drives him crazy (because she is so different from him i.e un-materialistic yet having an appreciation and eye for all things beautiful) but she is also the potential catalyst of his evolution.
Other supporting characters are:
  • Camillia Evergreen, Roger's granny who raised him. a bible fearing, soft, 'fluffy" old lady who like her cakes. She always thought Roger would do well.  "he was very bright, we had high hopes for him but  perhaps he was a bit odd" . She didnt understand what happened to him and how he became "Esus"
  • Dr. Karlmillions  Professor of anthropology and art history. A quirky excited German scholar give his analysis of the evidence of Esus.
I am also considering:
  • Bridget Mac's neurotic and concerned mother
  • Rogers' gangster buddy.
  • The spirit of the Artist's dead older sister
And further small part characters who will make brief appearances are:
  • cowboy
  • hippy,
  • witch
  • clown
  • tramp
  • bimbo
  • alien
  • official of some sort.
The project is being developed in three stages:
  1. Currently I am making short video clips creating profiles of each character using myself as the actress and costumes available in the shed. The final product will be a short 10 min film using the shed installation and my art as the backdrop. I am not certain if I will be all the characters or if I will end up using actors to play some or all of the parts.  Some clips will be solely of the shed (art installation) both during the day and at night and backed by enhanced with innovative/ avant guarde music.  The end product, a short video mockumentary" Who is Esus" I  will put up on the internet and my blog-spot to help promote my art installation, street exhibition and interactive performances.
  2. The first exhibition and public viewing is entitled: "Break in" The imaginings of a Wild West Cork Artist: Come to Esus's hideout and mysterious menagerie of all things weird and wonderful in the magical West Cork paradise of An Sanctoir. This will include the installation as promoted in video. Characters featured may or may not be present. Use of surrounding land may be included, walking the land encouraged.  viewings as well as a tour of An Sanctoir can be made by appointment. An Opening on Thursday June 21 will start in the afternoon and carry on until the evening into the night. The exhibition will be open for viewings by appointment otherwise drop ins welcome on Monday and Thurs from 12-2 until July 21. Donations to the Artist gratefully accepted.
  3. While this is going on I will continue to seek exhibition space in Cork City centre, Cork being the first port of call as it is the closest city to the shed. I am looking for an empty building shop/apartment. Buildings with historic or unusual character preferred. 1500 sq feet - 500 sq feet. The venue will determine how the installation is re-created. I do however have definite ideas on how to enhance and develop the project.

Evidence of Esus

The evidence of Esus is a shed full of colourful paintings, odd items, costumes and moving sculptures situated in a remote place in a wild West Cork hide out. To get there in itself is a sort of other worldly experience: through small seeminly one lane roads, up and down a track and through a black thorn tunneled path. Everyone who arrives there is already changed before they even enter the rough, wooden, large, tin roofed building. Once inside its hard to know where to look because you are surrounded by images which seem childlike and disturbing in their strangeness all at once. Messages scrawled across pages of scrap paper strewn about as if discarded after completion. It appears from their contents that Esus is planning to move out to the cities but in what form it is hard to know. It is likely that Esus is a shape shifter and a trickster to boot. Like what's the idea of putting floor dust in a display bag and calling it "all that remains" as if this were some priceless gold flakes or the DNA to life? Or the shiney stainless steel teapot on a pedestle that is an old speaker with a label "perfection" written on it? what about the fake fish bait in a posh watch box or the barbie parts sticking out of a pink heart container? The place is teeming with everyday objects that have been combined in odd ways to create something new. while sometimes at least aesthetically pleasing always sightly offsetting. And I haven't even begun to describe the paintings yet.

Upcoming event: The Dragon Tamer

The Mysterious Menagerie Trail, of all things Weird and Wonderful:

The Dragon Tamer

The Long awaited Return of the annual Magical Easter Adventure will be Presented at An Sanctoir on Easter Monday 2-5pm.
A walk and interactive performance on the beautiful land that is An Sanctoir in Ballydehob W. Cork. Admission will be €5, children under 3 free (please note that very young children may not be able to appreciate the event.) Children must be supervized at all times! It is advised to wear wellies or other suitable footwear. Two Rivers Cafe on site, raffel prizes, entertainment and animals.

All proceeds to Two Rivers Kindergarten.

Who is Esus? Esus's baby book:

Esus was born yesterday onto a blue and green planet called Earth.
white clouds dominate the atmosphere and are the afirmed parental messagers who tell Esus through their form and movement how to be.

It has been written in the Baby book that Esus was concieved by angels. But many believe he was created in the mind of a human girl child and he lived in her head for half of her life.

The question remains Who really is Esus? an artist? a poet or dancer?
A clown or loser? a visionary or con man? some people have met Esus as a girl child named Brigit Mac others as a mutant human rat called Artymous. Others believe he to be a powerful matriarch: the Queen of Hearts who's royal currency is the LOVE NOTE. but Esus has claimed to be The man of light himself a magician and a lover: the offical manager of the flow of love. Esus does have living friends and relatives. You are invited to come and meet them or maybe even the man himself. He will be living near you as soon as he can find a house to move in to.

Who am I today?

How is that the words come out and not look lost opon the page? Already as it lands on the screen: it appears as some pre-concieved notion as most of this drivel of bs seems to me now.
to be fair I was trying to promote my self as an artist and so far I have only connected with myself...so much for promotion.

so why am I really here?

I want to share something with you, with the world but I am not sure what or how.
It always looks so foolish when a loser tries to play a winner!
This has been a lesson time and time again but being the fool (and one that fools the fool): always believing in the dream(s) and my glorified self. Without fail I am seduced by my own imagination.

As I edge closer into the final stages of life, I am learning not to follow a path of prediction or even intent, but simply the path whose very step begins where my foot is presently and no further. So my imagination can not lead me astry to unattainable places. I simply follow each moment as it comes.

I am aware of all the wants. There are quite alot of things I want. I am working on accepting them at the same time letting them go. what is meant is here, right here right now.

I have a story to tell but I havent known how to tell it. perhaps now I can just let the dreams go and spill out into words and share with you my journey, a journey of inner landscapes and their outer expressions.

and just as the palette is wet I finish before I have even begun.
